Dear friends! A big homeland for every person starts with their small birthplace. We are proud to be living in the unique land of indigenous small peoples of the North whose values are intact. Working hard, loving their native soil, respecting ancestral traditions – their values are good guidance for us all and an example of wisdom and fortitude. “Chukotka. An Epic Saga. Introduction” is a photography exhibition that aspires to tell the inspiring story of this fascinating land and its inhabitants.
The authors have managed to capture the nuances of the coexistence of past and present. In Chukotka they are blended so organically that it’s not always easy to tell where past ends and present begins. Modern mineral mining can take place in the vicinity of a traditional lifestyle led by the reindeer herders who follow the animals far into the tundra, like their ancestors were doing for hundreds of years. Powerful ships are bringing cargo in thousands of tons, while marine hunters pursue whales in their baidara boats. It’s a unique land populated by persevering, brave and talented people with pure souls and warm hearts. Because of them the traditions are preserved, and the ties between generations remain strong.
